Lee's Bio
Lee graduated from Brooklyn College with a B.A. in Sociology in 1966.
He was a social worker in New York City for eight years before moving
to California to "follow his bliss."
Lee performed stand-up comedy in San Francisco before becoming an
innovator in the field of "humor as healing," eventually
serving as Director of the Humor in Medicine Program at the California
Pacific Medical Center in the early 1990's.
A lifetime of stage fright motivated Lee to develop a gentle, elegant
approach to break through the epidemic fear of being fully oneself
in front of groups. This process of discovery led him to a thorough
understanding of the principles of authentic leadership communication
through full presence.
In 1989, Lee developed Speaking Circles as a way to make
his innovative approach available to other people. Since that time
he has facilitated more than 4000 Speaking Circles, workshops,
seminars and retreats around the world. The organization he founded,
Speaking Circles International, has trained more than 250 Speaking
Circle facilitators, including over 60 in Europe.
Lee has been a member of the Northern California Chapter of the National
Speakers Association since 1990. He has presented his unique programs
at annual conventions, regional workshops, and at over 30 local chapters.
For the past fifteen years Lee has been an acclaimed keynote speaker,
consultant, seminar leader, and communications coach. He is fully
committed to working with communicators and leaders at all levels
of experience who want to be more authentic and effective with groups.
In 1996, Lee was awarded the Athena Award for Excellence in Coaching
and Mentoring.
Lee is author of Be Heard Now! Tap Into Your Inner Speaker and
Communicate with Ease (Broadway Books) and Be Heard Now! How
to Speak Naturally and Powerfully in Front of Any Audience (Sounds
True Audiotapes). He also published Magnetism, a monthly journal
for transformational speakers.
Lee currently lives in Woodacre, California with his wife and two
cats. His hobby is constructing crossword puzzles for the New York
Times.
